Down with MOD

You down with MOD? Yeah you know me. Okay a little lame, but I have to tell you about one of my favorite clothing sites, ModCloth. The retro indie clothing site has vintage style with modern trends. I love looking at the latest items and their Be the Buyer picks, where they let the shoppers choose the items to feature. How cool is that? They also feature vintage clothing and accessories, but you better get them quick because they only feature one of each item. And the best part of all… free return shipping. ModCloth definitely gets my healthy fashion approval. Check them out!

You Suck - Book Review

“You Bitch, You Killed Me. You Suck!”

I recently finished reading the book “You Suck” by Christopher Moore, and let me tell you, the first line of the book really sets the tone. C. Thomas Flood wakes up to find that has vampire girlfriend has just turned him. And now not only does he need to learn how to be a vampire, but he also has to worry about his girlfriends maker trying to kill them, his ex-coworkers trying to kill them, and throw in a couple of cops trying to kill them as well.

The book is a love story about two vampires trying to survive while learning how to channel their new found abilities. The book is jam packed with vampires, blue strippers, minions and much more. If you are looking for a fun, quick read I definitely recommend this book.

Enjoy!

A Customer Service Pick Me Up

I recently decided to revamp our current dresser in the guest room instead of buying a new one. The goal is to sand it, paint it black, and replace the hardware. Not too bad for my second DIY project!

And so I ventured out to find the tools and materials I need to bring a new look to this old dresser. After finding the paint and paint brushes I needed at Wal-Mart, I headed to Lowes in search of the hardware to update the existing knobs and pulls. Unfortunately, the hardware on this dresser is old and is not standard size, ie additional searching to find something that will work.

And so when I could not find the size of pull that I needed for the drawers by myself, I went up to the clerk to ask for help. I explained my situation and asked if there were any additional sizes. Now it seems to me that this would be a pretty common scenario. One that the sales clerk should be accustomed to. And yet, when I asked him for help he replied “Did you look at the items we have?” To which I replied, “Yes but I could not find the size that I am looking for.” And then this lovely sales clerk replied with the most helpful answer he could have, “Well if you don’t see it we don’t have it. Drill a new hole.” WOW! I could not believe that this was really happening.

As a young woman, it could be possible that I just didn’t know what I was looking for. And yet, he could not even take a moment to help me make sure that my solution was not available. And although you may be thinking that this response was not that bad…it gets worse. As I am standing there trying to find the solution in the items I already looked at before asking him, just to make sure it wasn’ there, he came and stood next to me to restock a certain pull. And he still did not acknowlege me or ask if I needed help. I was furious. Turns out that after searching for 2o minutes I did find the size, but I was so upset that I decided to go home and order it online from another store.

After leaving Lowes, I was not happy. I called my boyfriend and then my mom to discuss what had just happened. I then went to Publix with a huge chip on my shoulder after feeling that I had just experienced the worst customer service in my life. I was still upset about the encounter when I arrived at the check-out line. And then a funny thing happened. I experienced customer service at its finest. The bagger helped me unload my cart onto the conveyor belt and then offered to help me take my groceries to my car. Now, I must point out that this was not uncommon behavior from Publix staff. In fact, it happens everytime someone checks out. But at that moment, it was enough to make me forget about my previous encounter and go home happy. This customer service pick-me-up was all I needed. And so even though the entire ordeal was not that monumental or even uncommon, if you need a little customer service pick-me-up, might I suggest Publix?

Twilight Mushroom Ravioli

Hey everyone! I’m sorry it’s been so long since I’ve updated the blog. I know…you’ve missed having new recipes to try! In order to make it up to you, I would like to introduce a new category to the blog, “Recipes from Books.” My mission is to bring new low-fat, healthy recipes to you, so I decided to combine my recipe creation with another one of my favorite hobbies, reading. It never really occurred to me that there were so many amazing dishes that are mentioned in the books I love until a recent conversation with my good friend Wendy Norman from Lifestill Photography. With this new mission, I will be working to recreate recipes from some of my favorite books each week, adding a healthy twist to some fun new dishes.

So first up in this new category will be a recipe from a personal favorite book of mine, Twilight, by Stephanie Meyer. When looking at this book again with new eyes, it was very surprising to me how many food dishes are mentioned in a book that centers around vampires—who as well all know, don’t eat human food. The first dish I decided to recreate was the Mushroom Ravioli that Bella orders at La Bella Italia after being rescued from Port Angeles scum by Edward. Here is the passage from the book as a refresher:

Right on cue, the waitress appeared with our drinks and a basket of breadsticks. She stood with her back to me as she placed them on the table.

“Are you ready to order?” she asked Edward.

“Bella?” he asked. She turned unwillingly toward me. I picked the first thing I saw on the menu. “Um…I’ll have the mushroom ravioli.”

Now that you know where the recipe came from, check out our version of Bella’s mushroom ravioli!

Grill it Quick Portobello Pizza

I have had the Pampered Chef Grill it Quick cookbook for a while now, and I finally make the Portobello, Red Pepper & Goat Cheese Pizza. Let me tell you. It was amazing. This recipe is relatively lower in fat than other pizza recipes, but to slim down the calories, try using reduced fat feta cheese and low-fat pizza crust. Check out this and other recipes from the book. The cookbook is available here. I recommend checking it out!

In the meantime, may your days be jolly and your waistline keep slimming!
